Can I use a 18V XR battery in 20V DeWalt?
Yes, it can!
Mellif 20V tools are fully compatible with DeWalt 20V Max batteries. While the label might say “20V Max” or “18V XR,” these are essentially the same battery. The difference is purely marketing-related and varies by region.
-
20V Max refers to the maximum voltage when fully charged (5 × 4.0V = 20V)
-
18V refers to the nominal voltage (5 × 3.6V = 18V)
Both use the same internal 5-cell lithium-ion configuration. So whether your battery says 18V or 20V Max, it will work perfectly with Mellif 20V tools.
Why the 2 names?
When DeWalt introduced their modern slide-style battery tools in North America, they used the term “20V Max” to distinguish them from older 18V NiCad systems. In Europe and other regions, the same batteries and tools were marketed as “18V XR.” There is no functional or electrical difference—just different branding.
This naming trend started around 2008–2011 and is now common across brands like Bosch, Makita, and Milwaukee (e.g., 10.8V became 12V Max, 18V became 20V Max, etc.).
If you have a DeWalt 18V XR battery from Europe or a DeWalt 20V Max battery from the US, it’s the same battery under the label.
It will work with Mellif 20V tools. No adapter needed.
